3 Things You Need To Start Your Own Mini Business

You might already have them

I never thought I’d fall into the world of entrepreneurship.

It feels like a big and intimidating word.

It’s for the rich, the famous, or the experienced. I knew nothing about it. I don’t have a business degree. All my life, my parents just talked me into finishing College and getting a good job.

I cannot wrap my head around having my own business.

It would be impossible for me to have the capital to start one. I'm too shy to sell anything. I don't know any business model.

Heck, how does one start a business from scratch?

One day, I stumbled upon an article about making money online. I went down the rabbit hole and found a whole new world -- digital entrepreneurship.

I felt excitement and a surge of hope. It's as if I'd been given a chance to make it in the business world without having to go out of my house and be salesy.

Over the last 3 years, I’ve been working on my online business, albeit inconsistently. I’ve been liking the crazy ride because I enjoy:

Working on projects from the comfort of my home

I have better use of my “free time”

The dopamine from having extra income is unbeatable.

I get to incorporate what I’m passionate about into my days:

  • Writing on the internet

  • Working with gadgets/tech

  • Building a social media presence

Truth is it’s hard but if you want to get started, it’s simple. You only need these 3 things:

Love for learning

It’s not your fault that you got tired of learning.

Learning has a negative connotation because of the formal education system.

You’ve spent many years in school. You have earned your degree. Now you are making money from your hard work.

School conditioned us to learn the hard way:

  • Avoid making mistakes and get high scores.

  • Read a book you’re not interested in to pass the exam.

  • Memorize complicated words and concepts that you’ll never need in real life.

  • Lastly, you need to learn at a fixed phase (going to more advanced ideas before mastering the basics first) because you're learning with the class.

It’s no wonder people want to be “done learning” when they're adults.

They just want to enjoy life and make money because they've suffered enough from studying.

But learning in real life and business doesn’t have to be this way. You get to decide what you want to learn (instead of someone telling you what you should learn). You are allowed to make mistakes because they are part of the learning process. You get to apply the learnings to achieve tangible outcomes instead of only having the concepts in your head.

As a result, learning becomes fun.

Entrepreneurship is fun when you treat it as a vessel for learning.

Time investment

I've been seeing a little boy in my neighborhood every Sunday when I go to Church.

He is probably around 10 years old, under a big tree chilling in his chair. On his table in front of him, there are tupperwares and bread with a cardboard that says:

"Sourdough For $10"

I can't help but think how far this boy would get.

He had a business at a very young age.

He probably didn't need to spend any money to start it -- just asked her mom for what they had. And he gets to keep the money to buy what he wants.

Learning about digital entrepreneurship opened my mind to the biggest mistake I made:

Waiting too long to start a business because I didn't have a capital.

This kid had a physical business and made it possible with no money investment. Digital entrepreneurship is more about time investment rather than any other thing.

Gone are the days when you need to have money to rent out a place. You don’t need to pay for a graphic designer to pay for your logo. You don’t need to hire a team to create your product.

A business is simply something that earns you money from selling/making a profit.

Stop convincing yourself you can’t start one without a big capital.

Most of the time, you convince yourself of many reasons but you only need to start taking action.

And most people have time if they choose to. This can be as little as 2 hours per day.

If you don’t have the money to start a business, use your time to learn new skills and build digital assets.

You’re ahead of most people if you’re willing to invest time into something fruitful.

Willingness to wait

The funny thing is a lot of people have the guts to start an online business because it’s free.

A lot of people also give up after a few weeks or months.

It’s not that easy to give up.

It also makes it easy to stand out among the rest.

Once you have a love for learning and the time investment, it’s only a matter of time until something happens.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea that “nothing happens, then everything happens”.

I’d like to believe nothing is impossible if you are persistent.

You can start anything from zero and iterate your way to success.

And if you don’t like the idea of waiting, which most people don’t, then don’t think of it as waiting.

I’m not a patient person.

So whenever I “wait” for something, I view it as finding something better to do and forgetting about it.

Forget about earning your first $100,000. Think of it as finding hobbies (writing, recording videos, learning email marketing, etc) while you still don’t have the money.

Stop thinking about how long it takes.

Have you ever noticed that every time you don’t worry too much about achieving something, it starts happening? Like when you’re not waiting for the right person and they just suddenly come? Or when you’re not waiting for a new job opportunity and it’s suddenly in frong of you?

Just do what you gotta do and forget about the outcome.
