Breaking Free From 3 Common Beliefs That Sabotaged My True Potential

How I Challenged My Old Beliefs To Transform My Life

Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy

— Tony Robbins

Statistics say that only 3% of people reach their full potential.

It's sad to know that some people don't achieve great things because they're not aware of the wrong things they are doing.

They have no idea that there is another way of doing things.

One of the habits I picked up in the last 5 years is exposing myself to new information every day. This simple practice helps me become open to learning and challenge my beliefs.

Our conditioning and environment define most of our beliefs. Some of them will empower us. But if we don't reflect on them and challenge our thoughts, some of our beliefs will stop us from achieving success.

Here are 3 flawed beliefs I used to have:

Everything happens for a reason

I used to think there’s always one destiny for one person.

No matter what you do, you’ll end up where you’re destined to be.

No matter where you go, you’ll end up with the person destined for you.

And because of this, I didn’t try hard enough.

Why does it matter? If there’s already something waiting for me, why bother trying to fight destiny?

Every time someone would argue otherwise, I always felt triggered.

Last year, I became open to the idea that I could be wrong.

I’m not saying one is true and the other is not.

It was hard for me to decide what to believe in because I’m both spiritual and religious.

God has intended something for us. Yet, I also think that man can go against God's plans. Why do I say this? Because it's the reason why people do bad things. Everything that God planned is good but man has evil ways of doing things.

I always feel bad when I think I’m going against God's plans for me. But what if God wants to give me a chance to get what I truly want? What if He just wants me to wait and try harder? As long as I’m not hurting others, why would I not try to create my destiny?

What if unlimited possibilities are waiting for me? I first heard about this idea from Joe Dispenza. According to him, there are unlimited possibilities in the quantum field. The best thing about this? You don’t have to travel through time and space to reach these possibilities. You use your energy to attract them.

Life becomes much more interesting when you give yourself a chance to work hard and pick a better destiny.

Save more and invest the difference

I studied the world of investing for about 3 years.

The idea of saving more and investing the difference has stuck with me.

It makes a lot of sense for someone who’s just beginning their investment journey. When you have little money to invest, you’ll find ways to save more.

But when you think about saving more, you start to operate from a place of lack.

You think you don’t have enough so you start saving more.

You think you must spend less even if you’re living below your means.

You think money is hard to earn so you hold your money with both hands.

The next thing you know, you have saved little money but live a miserable life.

You're living in scarcity.

You can’t buy the things that will give you comfort. You don't want to spend your money on experiences. You overcomplicate every decision because they involve money.

Instead of focusing on saving, I now focus on earning more. In the beginning, it seems like "earning more" is harder than "saving more".

But this is wrong.

There is a limit to how much you can save. But there are unlimited ways to earn more.

When you focus on earning more, you start to become open to new opportunities. You become motivated to learn new skills. You start to see that there’s another way of doing things.

And this helps you operate from a place of abundance.

You’ll never worry about money because you know you can always make more.

Spending my money uncomfortably forced me to find ways to replace it. For example, when I decided to get my own place, I took freelance writing gigs because my rent was higher. This also led to other side hustle ideas.

I’m not asking you to make stupid financial decisions.

I’m saying to give yourself no choice but to thrive (not just survive) because you can.

Just be yourself

Out of all my flawed beliefs, this was the worst one.

“That’s just how I am” is an excuse you can always say at any moment you’re wrong.

I’ve never heard an excuse that’s more lame.

Yes, that’s how you are but you can change who you are. You’re like that because of your conditioning. That’s not how you were when you were born. That’s who you are because of the people you surround yourself with, and the environment you grew up in.

Change can happen fast if you decide to.

Most successful people are not successful because of the wealth they inherited or the education they had from prestigious schools.

It’s because they were in an environment where success was a normal thing.

If you know yourself enough, you'll know what to improve instead of thinking that's all you're going to be.

The truth is, there will be a hundred things that are wrong about you. And you shouldn’t just accept them because “that’s who you are”.

Be compassionate with yourself. Ask yourself why you feel and act that way. Go down the rabbit hole of your traumas and past experiences.

It will be hard.

But it will transform you into a completely different person.

To End

As an exercise, list down your beliefs on a piece of paper. Ask yourself whether each belief empowers you or stops you from being great.

That's it for today!

I hope you're having a lovely Sunday.
