How To Make $1000+ As A Beginner Writer

If I can do it, so can you

I recently came across a post on Medium.

The title was something about how much the author earned in September.

It was a 2-minute read article but I immediately just scrolled to the screenshot of his earnings.

It was $1,170.

“Cool. He must be doing something right because it’s not easy to earn this much on Medium.”

So I skimmed through his post.

I’m not going to lie –– my first impression was that his grammar was bad. It was obvious that English isn’t his first language.

I went through his other posts and noticed the bad grammar again. I’m not writing this post to offend him (I’m not even mentioning his name).

Despite this bad observation, I admire what he’s putting out there.

To be fair to him, I know he was providing value by creating genuine content. You can hear his voice as you read his article. He was sharing his unique journey and experiences so that others could learn from him.

The genuineness of his articles is not something AI could generate for him.

You gotta start somewhere

Do you know what sets this guy apart from 90% of people?

He dares to start despite not being good at it.

Nobody becomes a great writer just by thinking about writing and having a viral post the moment they post something. Nobody becomes a star tennis player if they are not willing to suck at hitting the ball on the first few tries. Nobody learns how to ride a bike before falling in the beginning.

So if you don’t know where to start, start here:

Face your fears and overcome your ego.

As they say,

“Burn your ego before it burns you.”

You never know what happens

I made $7 on my first digital product not too long ago.

I know it’s not a lot of money but it was a free product that I just decided to put on the internet. I didn’t think somebody would pay for it. I felt bad for charging because I didn’t feel like I was an expert.

I made it FREE for anyone who wants it. If they didn’t like it, that’s fine because they didn’t pay for it. If they thought it was bad, that’s fine because then I would know how to do it better next time. If nobody downloaded it, who cares because I just saved myself from judgment.

But If I didn’t post it, I wouldn’t have earned $7.

The thing that hurts more than your fear of being judged is all the opportunities you missed if you just decided to do it even when you suck.

The more you try, the more opportunities open up.

Having an unfair advantage over the rest

I see so many beginner writers who are focused on making money.

Nothing wrong if that’s the goal.

But when you are focused on the money:

Your creativity dies.

You won’t generate valuable content.

You’ll give up too quickly.

This person on Medium had the desire to learn how to write. He was consistent in publishing.

The person who’s willing to put in the reps every day will beat a person who was born talented.

So if you want to have an unfair advantage over the rest, embrace monotonous consistency.

Not everyone is willing to show up and get 1% better every day.

Everybody wants instant results.

The real dopamine comes from embracing the journey.
